CHEB
I SABBAH (six degrees)
Cheb i Sabbah left his native Algeria in the 1960s, and has made a career
out of blending music from all over the world into kaleidoscopic, dance-floor
mixes ever since. His first three masterful albums for Six Degrees Records,
Shri Durga (1999), MahaMaya - Shri Durga ReMixed (2000), and Krishna Lila
(2002), are cult classics in which India's time-honored traditions merge
with the universe of possibilities afforded by contemporary recording technology.
This trilogy established him as a unique artist who creates bridges between
cultures with a deeply moving sound drawn from DJ wizardry and world music
aesthetics. His attention to detail is reflected in his reverence for his
sources and his unique approach to electronic music. "I am a traditionalist
more than anything. I try to keep a certain amount of respect so you hear
the tradition of the music. What I try to do with producing music is make
more of a balance between where it comes from -- the source of it, the tradition
of it -- and bring in the dance sound." |

North African trance music with Burning Man energy and the jazz spirit of
John Coltrane.” (SF Weekly) Combining plush woodwinds with passionate
female chants, the band’s sacred, musical vibe continues over pulsating,
almost club-like rhythms in a wave of intertwined beats and melodies. |

JESSE
WRIGHT (pocket)
A bit about me? Sure, I love talking about myself.
The fact of the matter is...I have no idea what I'm going to do every time
I hit the decks. Which makes things interesting to say the least.
Any time someone comes to one of my gigs, the set is as unexpected to them
as it is to me. I get asked what my genre is a lot as well, and to that
I say "Fuck Genre!" and then I chase whoever asked me that around
the room for a while. Honestly, if I had to sum it up, I would say
some where in the progressive tech funk realm. But I hate to limit
myself too much. As a kid, I was a class clown, starved (or so it
would seem) for interaction. DJ-ism gives me that interaction with
all kinds of freaky people many of whom have become life-long friends and
have added so much color into my life. So, to sum it up, I'm a DJ
because we get free drinks. |

THE
STOVE
Exploration of sound and innovative collaboration of music is the
philosophy behind The Stove. Originally formed in 1997, producer Eduard
Glukhov evisioned a single cell orchestra. Proving the fact that you don't
need a bass player or a drumer to be a band. The Stove is nearly uncatagorizable
because their sound ranges from trip-hop to jazz to ambient to jungle. Needless
to say, they are extremely haunting with hypnotically
dark rhythms. Fronted by songstress Kristen Muirhead, The Stove relies on
her muse-scream/ siren-dream/angel-cre voice with beautifully integrated
harmonies. Accompanied by classically trained violinist Katya Murafa, who
delicately decorates the music with her eastern European gypsy accents.
Deeply influenced by Aphex Twin, Portishead, Ninja Tune, Nine Inch Nails,
Tori Amos and Bjork. The Stove is an artistically futuristic combination
of organic and electronic sounds!!! |
