This discussion is a brief journey inside our recycling infrastructure. It answers the central question of where stuff goes from your blue cart, and what we do with it. It also answers questions including:
Doesn’t it take more energy to recycle that?
How clean do I need to make my recyclables?
What are the most important things to recycle?
How do they sort them all out if I put them in the same bin?
Where does it all go?
What can’t I recycle?
How are we doing as a state and country?
What does recycling look like in other countries?
From my vantage point, it appears that many people have not chosen to a take a greater role in greening their lifestyles/community because they view the process as too complex (the multitude of choices) without the ability to view the good their choices have. In this talk we revoew the role of Americans in the global energy game, the waste we generate (~25% of the world’s trash with 5% of the population). I then discuss categories of choices and their level of eco-impact (which included social considerations like sweat-shops). The idea is you don’t have to live in a yurt and eat only chard, but can start making better choices every day. Categories I cover:
Clothing choices – organic fibers, bamboo (not a good choice!), synthetics, clothing recycling, buying from China (good and bad)
Home products – bleach alternatives, soaps (and what they are made of), beauty products (lead, animal byproducts)
Energy choices – standards (Energy Star, EPEAT, LEED), CFLs (and the mercury issue), batteries, REC credits and carbon offsets, and the concept/issues of phantom power and power grid base loading (i.e. power is cheaper at night)
Mobility – bikes, car choices (biofuels, hybrids, etc.), bikes, telecommuting options, incentives/employer benefit programs, and bikes ;-)
Food – Distant traveled, going local, seasonal produce, meat and meat production (30 million cows, 200 million pigs, 8 billion chickens slaughtered annually in US), synthetic inputs, GMO/GE, USDA Organic
Biofuels: Panacea or Problem? Biofuels have been covered frequently in recent media, sometimes touted as a sustainable, renewable, pollution reducing, foreign oil replacing panacea and other times denigrated as habitat destroying, pollution increasing, agribusiness dominated problems. This workshop will take a deep look into biodiesel and ethanol and will explore the multiple facets of these complex and controversial fuels. Ultimately, how biofuels are made, and from what type of raw material is crucial to determining a specific biofuel's benefits or drawbacks.
Michael works on advocacy and policy issues for a non-profit focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation. The bold vision is called FossilFreeBy33. He makes his own biodiesel from recycled restaurant waste vegetable oil with the Santa Barbara Biodiesel Coop.

Almost half of the energy used in California goes toward transportation. This workshop will explore how to reduce our impacts from getting around. Alternatives to driving, biofuels, more efficient vehicles, hybrids and plug in hybrids, electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, the impacts of flying and more will be discussed. What are the best solutions and what type of market penetration can we expect for alternatives? How will peak oil and increasing oil prices help make alternatives more realistic? There is no silver bullet for our transportation impacts, but a magic buckshot approach of adopting a basket of various technologies, policies, and mode changes may help us transition to a more sustainable transportation future.

Home composting is one of the most basic ecological practices we can do - literally giving back to the Earth so that it can maintain its fertility. There are a number of ways we can practice composting, even without a compost pile. We will explore the range of organic materials recycling - grasscycling, mulching, worms, feeding other critters, and classic pile styles. Of course, the connection between compost and gardening will be covered too. We'll even take a look at what we're doing on-site at the LIB event and discuss plans for composting at Burningman (no, not burning it.mostly.) This workshop comes with a satisfaction guarantee or your compost back!
Although it is often closely associated with gardening, Permaculture design is about a lot more. It is like an owners manual for living lightly on the planet (which we've seemed to have misplaced - a lot.). Permaculture design is a systematic process to creating food, shelter, energy and providing for other human needs using naturally occurring patterns and dynamics. The workshop format is an interactive team teaching approach to explain key Permaculture design principles and will encourage practical Q & A's. At the 2006 LIB workshop, we had about 100 very enthusiastic folks come away with some new perspectives and ideas for designing their own lives with more eco-sensibility and quality. Done right, Permaculture designs improve over time with less and less work required, to the point where the designer becomes the recliner!

‘Our body is a musical instrument, when the instrument is not tuned properly a state of dis-ease or imbalance occurs’
Each cell in our body is genetically programmed to maintain its own health and well-being. During the course of our life many environmental factors interfere with this state.
During this presentation I re-tune each participants body, initially by opening, clearing and re-balancing each of the 7 major charkas, plus the ‘high heart’. The high heart is the one heart that connects all hearts to the one, to spirit, to God. This chakra is commonly referred to as the Thymus gland or the center for the immunity system. It has been scientifically established that each of these chakras or energy centers are associated with a musical note or vibrational frequency. When this is added to a Restorative Yoga class or similar class the results are beautiful, transformational and much more.
'My vision and intention is to open the ‘high heart’ that connects us all together as one, again. It is my desire to learn how to give to and receive love from all of my brothers and sisters.'
'In summation, my presentation is a sensory experience where I awaken and activate all the senses with my sounds, aromatherapy scents, vibrational sounds and frequencies and the visual experience of color healing.'

Contact improvisation is the extemporaneous interaction between one or more people which can include contact in both the physical and emotional sense. it explores the connection of the mind and soul to the body, as well as its relationship to others and the surrounding space. Awareness of one's self and others in the space, the sharing of weight (both giving and accepting), counterbalance, and imagination are among the many varied elements.
Once there is light there is shadow. Shadow defines light. We are all aspiring to live a Spiritual life. By mere karma, our human life expresses itself through the shadow. Many times we judge our shadow, and reprimand ourselves for the need to work out this wounded shadow essence. This workshop will clarify the truth, that they are one and the same. The spirit can only experience it's human incarnation through the essence of light and dark via the shadow. The workshop is a fusion of yoga, breath, meditation, and dance movement, laced with creative empowerment teaching.

Plants contain complex and powerful substances known as essential oils. These are aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. Referred to as the essence of the plant, pure essential oils not only protect the plant but also determine it’s aroma. Essential oils have been used through out time dating back to 4500 BC. Essential oils were used in every day life for centuries. In modern days, research shows that pure essential oil can provide similar benefits to humans and animals that they give to plants.

Did you know that there are over 1 million different species of insects in the world!? Insects are the most diverse and abundant organism in the animal kingdom and they represent an important link in almost all ecological relationships. Insects are unique in that most completely change their shape, size, and color as they develop from eggs to larvae to adults in a process called metamorphosis. In fact, an insect can look so different in each stage of its life cycle that many people think different stages are different species!
This workshop is designed to teach children all about the life cycle of insects and how insects play an important ecological role at each stage, including herbivory, predation, and pollination. Children will learn how to identify the egg, larvae, pupa, and adult stages of ladybugs and painted lady butterflies using model replicas. They will also get up close and personal as they examine live and preserved specimens of various species of insects. Live and preserved specimens will be used to demonstrate the incredible diversity of the insect world.
Due to the interactive nature of this workshop attendance at each of the four 1 hour meeting times is limited to 10 people. The workshop is designed for children ages 5-10, but all ages are welcome.
Melanie has a passion for sound healing with the gong. The sound vibration permeates every cell clearing away any blockages while also cleaning the auric body. During a session, the gong puts people in a very relaxed space and sometimes may induce out-of-body experiences among other things.
- The Gong therapy is a method of regaining joy and consciousness. This is taking the path of spiritual development through the combination of the Gong's tones. The sound of the Gong can be used to balance the physical, emotional and spiritual body. This is a wonderful therapy for stress, depression, exhaustion, anger and hostility, feeling of separation and loneliness and all kinds of fear and other ailments connected with lack of balance and harmony in the organism. Observation: how this collapses quantum potential of any event into a new reality manifesting changes we seek and governs the world we live in.
Intention: how one can use intention to manifest better health and world experience.
Emotions: how they are neither good nor bad, but instead produce erroneous informational states which can alter our health, why present time consciousness is important for living in the now.
Group Healing: at the end of the workshop everyone is invited to partake in a group healing session aimed at clearing informational processing errors which cause faults in the filtration of sensory stimuli. Our brain filters out 99% of every external experience so we are only perceiving 1% or less of what is really here to experience. By clearing these errors, one will be able to enjoy the festival to its highest degree, free of much baggage we carry around with us as distortion.
