EDUCATION
An important part of LIB is educating our guests about the sustainable initiatives at the event and encouraging you to take part in them. Signs will be posted throughout the site to inform you about how to use the processes we have put in place, the positive difference it will create and how you can implement changes in your own lifestyle. These signs will be created on recycled cardboard and other reused materials with VOC-free and salvage paints.

The Green Education Zone is the central point for learning about sustainability at LIB and green initiatives you can implement at home. Here you will find workshops about veggie diesel conversions, worm farming, composting, permaculture and more.
As the event draws near we will be posting more information on our workshops and speakers, so check back to find out more details.
You can find information for greening your home, calculating your carbon footprint, offsetting your carbon emissions, tons of rebates on energy-efficient appliances, and links to other green websites in the Take Action section of the site.
ART

Giant murals will be painted on site during the festival with recycled and salvaged paints. Many of our decorations and art pieces will also be created from reused materials.
We encourage everyone to create recycled art for the festival and bring it to share… |
MATERIALS
We are dedicated to minimizing consumption and utilizing as many recycled and reused materials as possible. Many of the materials used for décor and construction are from previously used sources and are materials with low embodied energy. Some examples of festival items from recycled, reused, and salvage materials will include:
-Tables and seating in the art gallery
-Signage and paints
-Fabric and construction materials for stages
-Decorations on dj booths
FOOD
LIB supports sustainable agricultural practices and local distribution. Much of the festival’s food will come from local and organic sources. This saves on distribution energy and better preserves the soil and ecosystem in which the crops are grown, as well as support local business.

KITCHENWARE
All utensils and kitchenware provided at the event will be 100% biodegradable and compostable. These include cups, plates, eating utensils, food containers, and recycled paper napkins. Once used they should be placed in the organic compost bin. The products are made up of a variety of renewable materials such as potato, corn starch, sugarcane fibers, and PLA which is a biodegradable plastic. Sugarcane fibers are obtained from sugarcane pulp, an organic agricultural bi-product which usually is not otherwise consumed. Not only do these materials replace non-biodegradable polystyrene foams and plastics, but are also derived from processes which significantly reduce the amount of petroleum used and pollution produced.
TRANSPORTATION
![]() |
In 2006 the LIB Rideshare program helped eliminate around about 1,017 pounds of CO2 and 43 pounds of smog and asthma-inducing pollution from the roads.
Take advantage of the rideboard this year and use the opportunity to make new connections with amazing people – share your experience, share your music, share the fuel cost.
Need a vehicle to share? Grab a hybrid through EV Rental and spend even less money on fuel. |
OUR RIDE At the event you’ll see our staff using energy efficient transportation such as electric golf carts and bicycles. We will also be providing a bio fueled shuttle to help you get around the site with your camping gear.
Our transportation energy will also be reduced through maximizing bulk deliveries to the site and utilizing as many local goods as possible.
Don’t forget to attend our workshop to learn how to convert your car to veggie diesel so you can show up in style next year! |

PRINTING

Tickets will be printed on flax straw, hemp, and other post-consumer waste fibers. We will be using low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) soy ink instead of petroleum based ink, and no alcohol based solvents or chlorine derivatives are used in the printing process. All of this might sound weird, but it greatly reduces printing emissions.
Tickets will be provided through Living Tree Paper Company which has a strong environmental policy and uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Guidelines.
We also print all of our flyers, site maps and booklets with Living Tree Paper products.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
The LIB festival celebrates Mother Earth, not excess. We are committed to eliminating as much superfluous waste as possible through reuse, recycling, and composting. Last year 50% of all waste was recycled.

Our goal for 2007 is to save 80% or more of our waste. We will also be minimizing packaging and printed promotional materias. Containers will be provided for aluminum, glass, paper, plastic, and compost. Please take the time to place your items in the proper receptacle and help us preserve our precious resources. Through using our organic onsite composting system, you can learn how to create and use one at home.
