Wind Power with Kelly Hennigan
This workshop aims to provide an overview of wind power and a general framework for individuals to evaluate whether or not wind power is a viable option for them. Topics this workshop will cover include: how wind turbines work and the necessary conditions for generating electricity, the economics involved in small-scale systems, and the options available for people interested in using wind energy, including Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). The latter half of the workshop will be a discussion of one or more of these subjects depending on attendees' interest.

Home Composting
me composting is one of the most basic ecological practices we can do - literally giving back to the Earth so that it can maintain its fertility. There are a number of ways we can practice composting, even without a compost pile. We will explore the range of organic materials recycling - grasscycling, mulching, worms, feeding other critters, and classic pile styles. Of course, the connection between compost and gardening will be covered too. We'll even take a look at what we're doing on-site at the LIB event and discuss plans for composting at Burningman (no, not burning it.mostly.) This workshop comes with a satisfaction guarantee or your compost back!

Permaculture Design
Although it is often closely associated with gardening, Permaculture design is about a lot more. It is like an owners manual for living lightly on the planet (which we've seemed to have misplaced - a lot.). Permaculture design is a systematic process to creating food, shelter, energy and providing for other human needs using naturally occurring patterns and dynamics. The workshop format is an interactive team teaching approach to explain key Permaculture design principles and will encourage practical Q & A's. At the 2006 LIB workshop, we had about 100 very enthusiastic folks come away with some new perspectives and ideas for designing their own lives with more eco-sensibility and quality. Done right, Permaculture designs improve over time with less and less work required, to the point where the designer becomes the recliner!

Gasification: ancient chineese secret or back to the future?
OK. Point blank: my car runs on coffee grinds. Do I have your attention? Great. Go spend as many years as you want doing research... there are tens of thousands of sites and metric tons of information on gasification. But I condense it down to a digestible comedy act for your consumption. "Burn" wood. Or coffee. Or hippies. Bio mass. Whatever. Throw 'em in the hopper. The trick? Burn at a low temp... create an oxygen deprived environment and pipe the exaust (Co2 & hydrogen) to the carburetor of an internal combustion engine. Engine fires. Unmodified. Any questions? I can't answer 'em. Because I have no idea how the science of it works. I built my stuff out of old vacuum cleaner hose and some buckets and welded together some old air tank that leaked. Throw some bullshit in the hearth and light it on fire. Sign autographs. Easy peasy. Whatever. Gasification is a weapon that I wield to make fun of the green economy of social capitol that surrounds the alt fuel world. I'm a hot rod guy who bows before torque and bio-diesel makes me itch. I like the idea of solving our power problems with our garbage issues. I will show you how gasification works but please don't try to hug or bless me. I accept salami sandwiches as tips and have run a junkyard which makes me qualified to complain loudly about the issues of waste and comfort. Which I do without provocations. I will do a short schpeal on gasification and try to keep my politics to myself but likely will fail. I will show you what I did and let anyone play with the stuff or whatever. I'm a qualified mechanic and can answer questions but not a scientist and ya kinda don't really need to be one to do this stuff... which is the point. DIY conversions for no other real reason then just to see if it can be done. Insert your own politics or rhetoric. In the end, the machine that is most efficient is the quarter horse. And eating spinach is harnessing solar power. So bring your coffee grinds. It's greener to gasify 'em then compost 'em. Compost = methane. Gasification burns clean. And creates charcoal... good for gardens and such.

Matthew Smith has been studying and practicing meditation for more than a decade and has received teachings from the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Ram Dass, Roshi Bernie Glassman and Roshi Seisen Saunders.

Living our light, allowing our shadow with Jesse Lombardi
Once there is light there is shadow. Shadow defines light. We are all aspiring to live a Spiritual life. By mere karma, our human life expresses itself through the shadow. Many times we judge our shadow, and reprimand ourselves for the need to work out this wounded shadow essence. This workshop will clarify the truth, that they are one and the same. The spirit can only experience it's human incarnation through the essence of light and dark via the shadow. The workshop is a fusion of yoga, breath, meditation, and dance movement, laced with creative empowerment teachings.
